Take advantage of the opportunity to discover the sights of Southern Italy!
This course, conducted abroad, will expose you to the variety of cultures that have shaped Southern Italy throughout the centuries from the Ancient Greeks to Modern Times, through personal encounters, research, and a service learning experience. You will travel to unique mountain towns, visit people's homes, take in views of the Italian countryside, and embark on local trips that will truly give you a taste of Italian culture, including a workshop by the “School of Pizza!” What's more, you will also get a certificate from the "School of Pizza" for the theory and practice of pizza making!
Through the process of creating artistic images while experiencing the culture of Southern Italy firsthand, you will develop a deeper understanding of the people, the land and the customs that surround these areas. You will also discover firsthand how places like Matera, Poseidonia, Pompeii, Naples, Ravello, and the Amalfi Coast look through a camera lens! On the last three days of the trip, you will have the opportunity to explore Rome, the "Eternal City."
The course will satisfy an art studio elective for BFA majors as well as the Core requirement of Sociology or History. Italian majors/minors can register for ITA 4953: Independent Study (all readings and work will be in Italian and credit will be given for an Italian elective).
