Issues Affecting America: Responsible
Citizenship Fall 2008
How can for-profit and non-profit organizations collaborate to
solve the world’s most pressing issues? In 2000, 189 world leaders
came together at the Millennium Summit and adopted the United
Nations Millennium Declaration, setting in place an unprecedented
effort to meet the needs of the world’s poorest through eight
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Targeted for 2015, the MDGs
address a broad range of issues including halving extreme poverty,
halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary
education. Many countries have achieved progress; however, a number
of countries in sub-Saharan Africa are lacking behind the set
Goals. In order to place Africa back on track and to more
effectively address the MDGs universally, the UN recognizes that
besides working closely with Member States, it is essential to call
upon non-state actors to strengthen these efforts. Private sector
companies, foundations and non-governmental organizations are a
largely untapped valuable source of assistance in achieving the
MDGs. The United Nations Office for Partnerships, as the gateway
for partnerships with the United Nations family, engages
corporations, foundations and civil society in addressing the MDGs
— utilizing their strengths and resources to enhance the work of UN
agencies.
