Overview

The centerpiece of the University's commitment to writing is the Institute for Writing Studies, an endowed program integrating new and expanded Writing Centers on the Queens and Staten Island campuses, a new First-Year Writing program, and a new Writing Across the Curriculum program. Designed to facilitate collaboration and interaction between these programs and their staff, assist University faculty in the teaching of writing, and promote a variety of student writing initiatives, the Institute serves as the nexus for student writing, faculty development, and writing assessment.

The Institute opened in September, 2006, and was made possible through generous donor support and the University's commitment to the promotion of successful student writing. The IWS is located on the first floor of the main library on the Queens campus in a newly designed space featuring conference tables, workstations, a lounge, a seminar room, an up-to-date library of materials in composition and rhetoric, and offices for faculty teaching first-year writing. The Staten Island campus features a brand new Writing Center with adjoining offices for first-year writing faculty.
